Overview

This unit integrates taught material with professional and clinical pharmacy practice. In year 3, students:

  • demonstrate the ability to identify and resolve pharmaceutical care issues for one clinical area including comparison of treatment to guidelines, interpretation of patient results, monitoring for efficacy and adverse effects
  • use pharmaceutical calculations to recommend drug doses, concentrations and administration rates
  • observe and demonstrate interaction and rapport-building with healthcare professionals, patients and members of the public
  • engage in Continuing Professional Development, inter-professional and socially responsible activities to improve employment prospects, team-working and communication skills.

Aims

To enable students to apply their knowledge and demonstrate their professionalism and clinical skills in the real world setting of pharmacy practice.

To enable students to gain first-hand practical experience of working with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals.

Pharmaceutical Care Plan and Oral Case Presentation – Pass / Fail

Attendance – (online and/or face to face clinical placements; community pharmacy placement and Service Learning  Workshop) Pass / Fail

Feedback is provided via a number of varied methods:

  • Reflective Account: through peer evaluation
  • PCP/OCP: through individual written feedback via Blackboard
  • Calculations, CPD: through drop-in clinics.

Recommended reading consists of papers from clinical pharmacy journals and BNF chapters. You will find this material very useful when preparing your Pharmaceutical Care Plan. As clinical practice is constantly changing, this material will be reviewed at the start of each semester to ensure it remains relevant.
