Overview
This unit provides an introduction to the structural analysis, focusing on the topics that are relevant to Mechanical, Civil and Aerospace Engineering applications. Intended learning outcomes are, understanding of the basics of statics and structural analysis, awareness of the mechanical principles that govern forces and displacements in structures and development of analytical skills for simple structural element analysis.
Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce elementary concepts in mechanics of solids, and to establish a practical understanding of how they can be applied to the analysis of engineering structures.
Syllabus
1. Review of basic concepts in mechanics
2. Equations of equilibrium and free body diagram analysis
3. Truss analysis using methods of joints and methods of sections
4. Deformation of axially loaded members
5. Sectional properties
6. Shear and moment diagrams of bending beams
7. Bending beam stress analysis and beam deflection
Projects: Learning Structural Analysis from Real World. A group project with aim to learn how to analyse beam loading, stress and deformation based on real world examples from daily life or practical engineering products.
