Power production is central to industrial economies. This unit builds on earlier modules to allow more detailed analysis of established and novel work producing devices.

For students to be familiar with advanced power producing concepts, such as Chemical kinetics, laminar flames, and Gibbs functions, and devices including Fuel cells, internal combustion engines, supercritical steam plant and gas turbine engines.
Advanced steam/gas turbine analysis: relative and absolute velocity, velocity triangles, thrust, diagram power and diagram efficiency, velocity and pressure compounding.
Cryogenic engines: theory, devices and applications, such as the Dearman engine.
Advanced IC engine analysis: effects of friction on efficiency and work output, valve opening/closing effects, Miller cycle. finite rates of heat release.
CO2 fuelled gas turbines and refrigeration plant: theory and applications.
Fuel Cells: Introduction, the case for fuel cells and mode of operation, application of Gibbs function, rational efficiency, sources of loss.
Chemical kinetics and flames: introduction to laminar pre-mixed and non-premixed flames; law of mass action, preliminary analyses of global quantities such as flame speed, coupling functions, stoichiometry and transport
