Evidence Based Practice

The unit will develop students understanding of the importance of evidence as an underpinning determinant of best nursing practice. It will consider types of evidence and where evidence can be found, using a variety of pedagogic approaches, including Face to Face lectures, small group tutorials, a practical skills based workshop and access to a range of online resources.
This unit aims to enable students to recognise how evidence can be used to support and enhance best practice through developing students’ understanding of the principles of evidence based practice, enhancing students’ knowledge of how to systematically find evidence and supporting students’ ability to recognise, review and appraise a variety of evidence sources.

Students will normally have the opportunity to receive feedback on formative work submitted prior to the summative assessment. Other feedback opportunities will also be available in class and online discussion boards. Online feedback is provided in Grademark. Provisional feedback based on internal marking will be made available prior to the Exam Board on the basis that these marks are yet to be ratified at the Exam Board and therefore may be subject to change. A standard feedback mechanism in Grademark is utilised across all undergraduate programmes within the School which provides detailed and constructive feedback on each component and aspect of assessment and identifies areas of strength and those aspects which could be enhanced.
Student feedback is obtained in class discussions, via formal University unit evaluation forms and also qualitative, in house evaluations at the end of the unit.

Formative Assessment Opportunities:
This is an open book exam. Students will be given the question and review paper 6 weeks prior to the exam date. Students will be given the opportunity to ask additional questions about the exam at a small group tutorial session 1 week after they have received the exam information and 5 weeks prior to the actual exam.
Additionally, students will all receive 1 whole group face to face lecture on the assessment. task A bespoke area on Blackboard dedicated to information about the assessment, detailed guidance in the unit handbook, and an allocated tutorial lead, who will lead the tutorial and answer specific questions for both formative and summative work.
