Tuition fees for home students commencing their studies in September 2025 will be £9,535 per annum (subject to Parliamentary approval). Tuition fees for international students will be £36,500 per annum. For general information please see the undergraduate finance pages.

Overview

The course aims to further develop the skills acquired in LEAP French 1 & 2. It extends the emphasis on communication and comprehension skills through the use of high-frequency language expressions to describe topics of personal interest and current affairs and specific themes relating to everyday life. This will enable students to conduct longer oral exchanges related to limited specific topics or themes or give a short presentation or information about an event. It also further consolidates the grammar already acquired, and enhances students’ skills in reading and writing by equipping them with a broader range of

The course also serves as preparation for the French Ministry of Education Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française - Niveau B1 (DELF B1) should students wish to sit for this internationally recognized qualification.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of LEAP French 2 or equivalent (e.g. GCSE Grade 6 and above taken in the last 3 years).
Co-requisite: If you are studying a Modern Languages Degree, either single or joint honours, please refer to relevant guidance about eligibility for LEAP units on your programme structure.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Demonstrate greater understanding and knowledge of language structure and able to handle further grammatical rules.
Demonstrate reasonable competency in comprehension and listening through accurately extracting key information from written and audio sources on specific familiar topics related to personal interest and current affairs;
Recognize and use known expressions and fundamental phrases that occur in everyday situations;
Communicate orally in simple, routine situations and handle short social exchanges about familiar topics with reasonable fluency;
Independently write short texts on limited familiar topics’ using a variety of vocabulary and formulaic expressions.

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level B1 of the Common European Framework.

Teaching and learning methods

One three-hour seminar per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary. This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning.

Information handling, IT skills, cultural appreciation, language awareness, discussion, formal presentations.

Semester one: Week 12- Written Exam 30%
Semester two: Week 11- Listening Exam 10% & Written Exam 30%; week 12 - Oral Exam 30%

informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities;
formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
