Overview
Checking adequacy of structural members to withstand forces applied on them without excessive deformations is an essential part of structural design. This unit provides an introduction to structural design according to limit state design principles and presents detailed design checks for different types of steel and reinforced concrete structural elements, according to Eurocode 2 (for concrete) and Eurocode 3 (for steel). The intended learning outcomes are to enable students to develop an understanding of the requirements of structural design and the ability to design simple steel and concrete structural elements. The course is delivered as 24 hours of lectures and 6 hours of tutorial work, some of which is laboratory-based. Assessment is 80% exam and 20% coursework.
