Overview
In order to produce innovative, sustainable and competitive design in practice, the structural engineer needs to be able to select appropriate solutions from all available materials and techniques. This unit provides an introduction to design using advanced techniques which can produce greater efficiency when using steel and concrete elements. As two of the most common building materials in the world, the design of masonry and timber elements is also explored.
Aims
Building on knowledge gained in steel and reinforced concrete design, this unit aims to expand structural engineering design capability by introducing students to the design of elements and simple structures using pre-stressed concrete, timber, masonry and composite (steel/concrete) construction.
Syllabus
• Pre-stressed concrete: design for serviceability and ultimate limit states.
• Timber: design of flexural and axially loaded timber elements.
• Masonry: design of vertical and laterally loaded elements.
• Composite construction: design of simply supported beams for flexure, shear and serviceability.
