Why study Modern Languages at Manchester?

Study a foreign language with us and you’ll gain more than linguistic fluency. You’ll also explore culture, society, history and politics relevant to your chosen language(s), helping you to develop intercultural awareness and communication skills– highly valued by employers.

We offer nine languages at degree level: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. You can also learn Catalan and Portuguese as part of our Spanish degrees, and Polish as part of the Russian ones. There is also an opportunity to learn Korean with us (subject to programme approval).

Through our East Asian Studies and Middle Eastern Studies degrees you can acquire in‑depth knowledge and understanding of these cultural areas without having to learn a local language.
