Student travel
With many of our students living on or nearby campus, sustainable travel options like walking, running and cycling are preferable. We understand, however, that travel choices depend on several factors, so we provide a wide range of information to support sustainable travel choices.
The University is well connected by buses.
Free travel is available on the 147 bus along the stretch of Oxford Road designated for bus, taxi and cycle only.
Use Transport for Greater Manchester’s journey planner to find the best way to travel to and from the University by bus.
Students can get discounted Unirider tickets for Stagecoach and Magic bus services in Greater Manchester.
Cycling is a great way to get to and around campus. Lina talks about the benefits of cycling in her ‘Top tips for riding your bike in Manchester’ video.
Cycle facilities
There are nine cycle shelters on campus and 4,000 cycle parking facilities, along with 65 showers for use by postgraduate students and University colleagues.
There are also cycle shelters at University residences, including City Campus, Victoria Park and Fallowfield Campus.
Our campus map shows you where to find our cycling facilities.
Looking to rent or purchase a bike?
Biko Bikes is a student-led project that repairs reclaimed bikes and rents them at £1 per week.
You can find regular second hand bike sales on Fallowfield Campus.
The MCR strollers is the University walking programme. They offer regular guided walks from campus and provide a great way to get out, get active and meet new people.
There is also a running community at the University. Run Wild host free weekly runs suitable for all abilities, along with regular social events.
The University campus is a short walk from three of the city’s main train stations:
- Manchester Piccadilly – a 20-minute walk or a short journey on the free 147 bus.
- Manchester Oxford Road – a 15-minute walk.
- Manchester Victoria – a 25-minute walk.
The nearest tram stops are at Deansgate or St Peter’s Square, both a 20-25-minute walk away from campus.
