Aims
The unit aims to:
- introduce hard and soft issues that affect the successful development and implementation of information systems in developing and transitional economies
- provide training and critical examination of the steps and various tools and techniques required to analyse, design and implement information systems
- examine the role of social and human factors and participative techniques in information systems development
- provide the opportunity to put analysis and design skills into practice
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, you should be able to:
- Describe different approaches to the introduction of new IS
- Select and apply appropriate tools and techniques of systems analysis and design, relevant to the context of developing/transitional countries
- Analyse and design a prototype information system
- Plan and recommend the implementation of an information system
Teaching and learning methods
Each face-to-face 3-hr lecture session includes lecture presentation, case study material, student group activities and exercises, and group discussion. Tutorials are optional and provide further practical exercises and case studies. Additionally, students are expected to engage with e-learning materials provided via Blackboard to support learning. These include lecture slides and exercises, extensive session notes, model solutions to exercises, links to research papers and websites, etc.
The course is highly participative, encouraging students to share knowledge and experience. It is also practical, encouraging students to apply tools, techniques and theory to real-world case studies, with a particular emphasis on developing country contexts.
