Aims
To explain both the positive organisational potential of new information systems, and the sometimes negative reality of partial or total failure through an understanding of information, of information technology, of information systems, and of the contexts - especially those of developing/transitional country organisations - in which these systems are used.
To give participants the knowledge to understand the role of information and information systems in organisations
Learning outcomes
After completing the module participants will be able to:
- define 'information', 'information technology' and 'information system'
- understand and utilise structural and process models of information systems
- compare hard, soft and hybrid perspectives on information systems
- describe the generic role and value of information in organisational tasks of decision-making and communication
- explain how contextual - including developing/transitional economy-specific - factors affect information and information systems
- evaluate existing information systems using models including design'reality gaps
- describe the components, applications, benefits and costs of organisational information systems
- evaluate the role of information and information systems in an organisation with which they are familiar
Teaching and learning methods
Distance Learning Mode including weekly online tutorials
Assessment methods
One 3,500 word essay (90%)
Tutorial participation (max 10%)
- Student must engage with minimum of 4/8 tutorials, including at least 1 synchronous tutorial (5%)
- Student must engage with minimum of 6/8 tutorials, including at least 1 synchronous tutorial (10%)
Re-sit Assessment: One 3,500 word essay (100%)
