Overview
This unit will be delivered via a combination of a hands on, lab based course (3 hours x 6 sessions), regular attendance at consultant assessment and treatment planning clinics and regular consultant supervised treatment sessions for the students. Students will also regularly present at and participate in departmental journal club. They will design, implement and present a clinical governance project with support from their educational supervisor.
Aims
- Placement of rubber dam and fissure sealants in the paediatric patient
- Composite restoration of anterior and posterior primary and permanent teeth in the paediatric dental patient
- Preparation of a primary tooth for vital pulpotomy and placement of a preformed metal crown
- Management of the immature permanent incisor using MTA apexification and use of thermoplastic obturation techniques
- Use of the “wand” for the delivery of local analgesia
Teaching and learning methods
Knowledge and understanding
- Place rubber dam and fissure sealants in the paediatric patient
- Place composite restoration of anterior and posterior primary and permanent teeth in the paediatric dental patient
- Prepare a primary tooth for vital pulpotomy and placement of a preformed metal crown
- Manage the immature permanent incisor using MTA apexification and use of thermoplastic obturation techniques

- Prepare of x 6 paediatric dental examination cases
- Develop presentation skills and critical appraisal skills through participation on regular departmental journal club and the planning, implementation and presentation of a clinical governance project
Intellectual skills
- Understand and be able to define clinical governance and describe its pillars
- Have an understanding of audit, service evaluation and research and describe the difference between these
- Have a thorough knowledge of and be able to describe the literature concerning restorative materials and techniques for the primary and young permanent dentitions
Practical skills
- Have the ability to deliver effective local analgesia to the child patient
- Be able to undertake a range of paediatric dental treatments including the preparation and restoration of primary anterior and posterior teeth, the completion of vital and non-vital pulp therapy for primary and permanent teeth, the placement of preformed metal crowns using Hall-style and conventional techniques, MTA apexification and thermoplastic obturation of immature non-vital anterior teeth
Transferable skills and personal qualities
Students will develop literature review skills, critical appraisal skills and presentation skills.
Assessment methods
Written clinical governance project (80%)
Oral presentation of the clinical governance report (20%)

Written feedback on the project will be provided within 15 working days. Immediate verbal feedback will be provided on the oral presentation.
