We require a good Upper Second Class Honours degree or international equivalent in any of the following: electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering, physics, or equivalent scientific discipline which includes a significant mathematical or engineering content.
Applicants will be considered with alternative qualifications who also have appropriate industrial experience.
To progress to the second year of this course, we usually require performance at Distinction level. Students who do not meet the criteria to progress to the second year will instead graduate with the one-year Renewable Energy & Clean Technology MSc or an alternative appropriate qualification.
When assessing your academic record, we take into account your grade average with particular emphasis on relevant course units and the standing of the institution where you studied your qualification.
Applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place must demonstrate that they have met all the conditions of their offer by 31st July 2022.

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2022, the tuition fees are as follows:

UK students (per annum): £12,500 year 1, £6,000 year 2
International, including EU, students (per annum): £28,000 year 1, £14,00 year 2

Self-funded international applicants for this course will be required to pay a deposit of £1000 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. This deposit will only be refunded if immigration permission is refused. We will notify you about how and when to make this payment.
Policy on additional costs
All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. English language
All applicants to the University (from the UK and Overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency. The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either:
- IELTS at least 7.0 overall with no subtest below 6.5, or;
- TOEFL iBT : at least 100 overall with no subtest below 25. We do not accept 'MyBestScore'.
- Pearson PTE (UKVI) : at least 76 overall with no subtest below 70.
- An acceptable equivalent qualification.
Please note that if you hold English as a second language iGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your iGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the academic School for clarification.
The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK and the EU must show evidence of a minimum level of English Language in order to be granted a UK visa (Tier 4 visa) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the 'B2 level'.
Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are likely to be higher than the B2 level. Advice to applicants
Please note that we can only assess complete applications. Complete applications must include all of the applicable items from the following list:
- Official Bachelor degree transcripts, including official translations and original language copies if study not undertaken in English. 2+2 and 3+1 applicants must provide official transcripts and certificates from both institutions.
- Final Degree Certificate, or Study Certificate confirming dates duration and level if degree not yet complete.
- At least one supporting reference letter, signed by hand and on headed paper. These can be scanned and uploaded when you apply or emailed to pgt-eee@manchester.ac.uk . We do not request references on an applicant's behalf and it is your responsibility to ensure your referees know how to provide your reference to us.
- If still studying, please provide an official list of all the modules you are taking in your final year.
- Applicants studying in China are required to provide an official document confirming average percentage grade.
- A CV if you graduated more than three years ago.
If English is not your first language, we also require proof of your English language ability. If you have already taken an English language qualification, please include your certificate with your application. We may be willing to consider your application without this document, but if we choose to make you an offer, the conditions will include IELTS (or equivalent qualification).
Please note that failure to provide these documents may lead to your application being declined. We will only contact you once to request any missing documents, and failure to provide them by the deadlines given in our email will result in your application being unsuccessful.
How your application is considered
We consider your full academic history including which course units you have taken and the marks obtained. Even if you have met our minimum entry requirements, we will take into account your marks in relevant course units in our final decision making.
If you graduated more than three years ago, we will also consider the information contained on your CV and any relevant work experience you have to assess if you are still able to fulfil the entry criteria.

Overseas (non-UK) applicants

Please upload a copy of your current valid passport with your application showing the photograph page with your application. For CAS purposes, this must show your full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number and the date the passport is valid until, which must be later than the date of your planned arrival in the UK, and the start date of your course.
If you have previously studied in the UK on a Tier 4 visa as an undergraduate or postgraduate student, please send a copy of your previous CAS statement to us as it will assist with the issue of your new CAS statement. This includes study in the UK on study abroad programmes and any study that you did not complete.
You cannot use your CAS to apply for a visa more than three months before the start date of your course. The Admissions Team will contact you at the appropriate time.
Your CAS number is only valid for one Tier 4 application.

Course description
The REACT course will provide you with a detailed understanding of the key renewable energy generation technologies and the factors which influence their exploitation.
It provides the foundations necessary to understand the principles of solar, wind, and marine energy technologies and also the knowledge required to understand: the efficient distribution of renewables; their integration into usage into zero carbon built infrastructure and to determine the economic and climate issues affecting the choice of renewable.
Prior to your Summer break at the end of year one, you will be allocated your dissertation project. You will meet with your supervisor to discuss your dissertation and agree on the exact topic - this step enables projects to be well-aligned with your interests and those of your supervisor. Your extended project takes place throughout semesters one and two of your second year,giving you the opportunity to devote yourself to investigating an engineering challenge, and developing research skills of relevance to either future academic studies or work in industry. Extended projects will be available focusing on material from across the taught content of the REaCT MSc. Assessment of the extended project include participation in a mini-conference (poster, academic paper and presentation), an extended abstract, and a dissertation.
Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD), the University of Manchester's new £400m purpose built home for engineering and material science , is nearing completion. The physical move to the new development is scheduled to take place between January 2022 and December 2022. Whilst it is anticipated that access to equipment, or work on projects for which such access is required may be limited during the period of the move, plans are underway to ensure that any disruption caused is minimised, a wide selection of dissertation projects will continue to be available, and excellent student experience remains pivotal.
