The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission supports around 750 awards annually at universities around the Commonwealth.The CSC makes available seven types of award:

  • Scholarships for PhD research
  • Scholarships for Master's study
  • Shared Scholarships with UK universities in support of Master¿s programmes
  • Academic Fellowships for staff serving in developing country universities
  • Split-site Scholarships for PhD students to spend up to one year in the UK
  • Professional Fellowships for mid-career professionals in developing countries
  • Distance Learning Scholarships for developing country students to study UK Master's degree courses while living in their own countries

Please note, however, that not all types of Commonwealth Scholarships are offered to all Commonwealth countries. For further information, please contact the national agency in your home country.

Other eligibility criteria

Applicants must hold an offer of study at The University of Manchester before applying for this funding.

Open to Commonwealth citizens, refugees or British protected persons permanently resident in any Commonwealth country other then the UK. There are additional requirements for awards involving clinical training in medicine and dentistry. The Commission may require candidates to undertake the IELTS English language test as a condition of eligibility. The Commission or host institution in the UK may require a candidate to take particular English tests and/or training in English. Some subjects and modes of study may be available/restricted depending on the award.

Academic merit of the candidate and the quality of the proposal. For candidates from the developing Commonwealth, the likely impact of the work on the development of the candidates home country. For those candidates from the developed Commonwealth, demonstrated or potential leadership qualities.
