Business Law 1: Law, Business Liabilities and the Consumer

The course unit will focus on the common law approach to Contract Law and the Law of Tort.
This course unit will examine how the law operates to ensure coherence, fairness and efficiency in the conduct of business, and will give the international context and commercial status of these two major areas of business law.
Students will study the interaction between various principles of business law, current issues in the business world, case studies and learn how to apply legal rules to real and hypothetical problems.
On completion of this course unit students should be able to:
Understand, recognise and apply fundamental principles of business law.
Identify legal risk and avoid liability where possible, and be able to work in a business law context.
Analyse legal trends and assess their importance for business strategy.
Locate and update information from a variety of specialist sources in a fast moving legal area.

Total study hours: 100 hours split between lectures, classes, self study and preparation for classes, coursework and examinations.

2000 word report (‘structured essay’) 40%
2.5 hour examination at the end of Semester 2 - 60%
The examination will consist of three sections. Section A (Case Study), Section B (Contract Law) and Section C (Law of Tort). Section A is compulsory; in addition one question must be answered from Section B and one question must be answered from Section C.
Section B and C questions will be a mixture of unseen problems and essays.
The coursework consists of one 2000 word report (structured essay) on Consumer Law. To be submitted in video format rather than text. This word limit must not be exceeded. Any words over the allocated limit may not be marked or count towards your final mark. The report to be recorded by the individual student in head and shoulders frame only, straight to camera; subtitles to be applied and references attached.
