Course description

This course has a strong focus on the unique way in which fashion products are marketed. Key marketing theory is studied with specialist emphasis on the interface between design/ creativity and the commercial imperative.

Fashion marketing theory is about understanding and satisfying consumer needs. There is a focus on developing an understanding of the fashion consumer, consumer behaviour, segmentation, targeting and positioning. Internal and external influences on individual and organisational decision making are also considered.

Fashion marketing considers the fashion product, the nature of pricing (with costing and global economics in mind), the way the product is branded, communicated and promoted to consumers and the environment in which it is sold. The global nature of the fashion industry and its impact on marketing is considered.

A key feature of fashion marketing in these programmes is the opportunity to study multimedia Computer Aided Design packages in the context of brand concept, communication and application. The concepts of marketing most relevant to fashion, for example visual merchandising, public relations, social media and multi channel marketing are given particular emphasis in the programme.

Special features

Students may apply to extend this degree to four years, and spend their third year either on industrial experience or studying abroad.

Students wanting to take the Industrial placement pathway are responsible for finding their own placement. They will work closely with the careers office and both the placement tutor and administrator to find a suitable placement.  They also have access to former placement providers who often take students each year.

Teaching and learning

At Manchester you will be taught by academic staff who are leading experts in Fashion Business and Technology, in a diverse and inclusive learning environment. Teaching and Learning will be delivered using a variety of methods, including:

  • Large group core learning sessions
  • Small groups workshops with technical staff
  • Student activity led seminars.
  • Tutorial sessions
  • Independent study tasks
  • Self-directed study
  • PASS sessions and peer mentoring

Some activities will be delivered face-to-face and others online, following a blended learning approach.

The course contains creative, practical, technical, and business elements within the Year 1 and students will study a variety of units that reflect these attributes. Within Year 2 students start to focus on discipline specific areas of study and choose to individually personalise their programme with two optional units that reflect key areas within the fashion industry. In the final year, students focus on higher-level strategic thinking within key projects that reflect their discipline and showcase areas of expertise. Each year building your skills, knowledge, and confidence towards becoming a graduate within the Fashion business and technology industry.

A typical week in your first year of study will comprise 40 hours of activity, of which approximately 17 hours will be timetabled study and 23 hours will be independent or self-directed study. Given the strong practical elements in this course, a typical week will include approximately 3 hours of hands-on practical work.

As you progress through the course an increasing emphasis will be placed on independent study, and this reflects you applying your knowledge and skills in substantial individual and group projects. In your final year of study, between 20 and 28 hours each week will typically be independent study. You will be supported by staff through all your independent study, and this transition to being able to explore your own ideas through project work is an important attribute of a graduate within the Fashion business and technology industry.

The course is assessed by a variety of methods, each appropriate to the topic being assessed. These methods include coursework exercises, written examinations, online examinations, presentations, and practical demonstrations. You will also have many opportunities to self-assess your progress using online quizzes and tutorial exercises. 

PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) and Peer Mentoring 

We're proud of our innovative PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) and Peer Mentoring scheme. The PASS scheme provides additional support around the current week's tutorial. It's entirely voluntary and consists of second, third and fourth-year current students helping first years to tackle problems defined by the content of the current tutorial. The emphasis is on showing students how to think about the problems, how to develop problem-solving skills and how to get the most from the educational resources available.

More about blended learning 

Some of your activity will be synchronous, where you learn live with your lecturer / peers and can interact as appropriate - helping you get support and feel part of a community. At other times it will be asynchronous, where you access materials like presentations, video content, online discussion boards or collaborative documents in your own time (within a framework provided by your programme).

We believe this blended approach will help each individual study in a way that works best for them and will ensure students receive the best student-experience.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is normally by a mixture of traditional written examinations and course work which includes laboratory reports and, in some cases, practical, technical, and creative projects. You have the chance to simulate real life experiences within some of your assessments as well participating in some cases with group projects and presentations that reflect industry practices. The final year projects give students an opportunity to do genuine and original research that is evidenced in a variety of written and visual forms.

If you choose to take the four-year pathway with industrial experience, your year in industry is assessed through a written report, appraisal by the host organisation and an oral presentation contributing 20% towards your final mark.

The first year establishes the fundamentals in fashion business, textile science and technology through the core units of Introduction to Fashion Buying, Introduction to Management, Introduction to Marketing and the core textile science and garment technology units where students are introduced to fibres, materials, fabrics, and textile production processes.

Course content for year 2

The second year builds on the principles introduced in the first year by exploring specific aspects of management and marketing in depth with subjects such as product development, operations management, Fashion business and analysis and garment production technology. The specialist focus of the programme in the second year considers various aspects of managing the fashion supply chain. There are optional specialist subjects that students can choose from focusing a variety of areas such as clothing technology and textile structures, creative product development, digital branding, international business and sourcing and fashion promotions and the in-store environment.

Course content for year 3

The final year provides an opportunity to consolidate and extend specialist knowledge in areas of management studied in previous years. You may choose from a range of fashion business options within leadership, sustainability, and fashion business in the digital age. The final year projects allow you to specialise in an area of your choice, for example focusing on developing a broader corporate strategy for a fashion business, the development of a business start up company or combination of business skills and innovative materials and technologies for emerging fashion and textiles markets.
