Overview
Introduce the use of reference sources, prescriptions, production of medicines and communication to students from the pharmacist perspective.

IPP calculations lecture and workshop

Aims
At the end of the unit students will:
- Understand of the basic principles of pharmacokinetics
- Understand the basic principles of effective communication in healthcare
- Understand the basic principles of pharmacy law and good practice relating to prescriptions and labelling
- Understand the basic principles of different formulations and their advantages and disadvantages
- Be able to use reference sources to find information about drugs in relation to prescriptions and make decisions about the prescriptions appropriateness
- Be able to communicate effectively and safely the use of product to patients
- Be able to accurately perform dose calculations using information from reference sources without a calculator
- Be able to accurately make extemporaneously made products by following a provided method
- Be able to accurately make records for extemporaneously made products
- Be able to give constructive feedback on fellow students’ performance.
- Have a basic understanding of how to administer first aid over a range of medical emergencies
Assessment methods
- First aid – online assessment at the end of semester 1 - pass/fail
- Extemporaneous dispensing record keeping assessment (5 credits) at the end of semester 2 – pass/fail (pass mark 50%) – 3 attempts.
- Extemporaneous dispensing practical assessment (5 credits) at the end of semester 2 – pass/fail (pass mark 50%) – 3 attempts.
- OSCE (10 credits) – at the end of semester 2 – pass/fail – 3 attempts
NOTE: The Pharmacist content will also be assessed in the IPP unit (semester 1 and 2 integrated exam and all integrated assessed sessions)

- Formative feedback on additional extemporaneous dispensing record keeping exercises with provision of model answers for self-reflection
