Are you considering a career in teaching, or working with children and young people? Do you believe all children and young people have the right to grow and reach their full potential? Do you want to gain experience of being a professional in an educational
setting as a member pf the teaching staff?

This unit gives you the opportunity to successfully complete a half-day-a-week teaching placement over 10 weeks in a Greater Manchester school. It gives you the opportunity to assist teaching and to support and inspire children and young people to engage in learning.

At the same time, you will further your own learning through keeping a weekly journal and through developing skills in analysis and reflection. This process aims to help you critically reflect on your understandings of your experiences in one written assignment for 10 credits.

You will share and learn from other students about your differing beliefs and understandings about education, and the complexities of your experiences of working in your placement schools.

You will develop your, professional skills through supporting professionals and pupils in schools, your critical reflective skills by using a provided critical framework to guide you, and your understanding of the English education system.

On successful completion of the unit, you will be able to:

10 Credits

  • Placement in a school - ten half-days spread over ten weeks. The half-day is selected according to your availability and suitability for the school

Teaching and learning methods

10 Credits

  • 10 half-days over 10 weeks on placement in a school
  • 10 hours recording evidence and reflections in reflective journal
  • 6 x 2 hour seminars

Critical Thinking

Students will be offered an intellectual frame through which to analyse and critically reflect on complex social situations in school, and their own classroom interactions in these situations

Assessment methods

2000 word written assignment on reflective practice (100%)

Feedback methods

The student will self-evaluate and may discuss with their link-teacher their placement progress, areas for improvement, and overall performance.

Academic tutors will give formative feedback on one draft per assignment, as long as this is received in good time so that further changes can be made post-feedback.
Academic tutors will also give a summative % grade and formative feedback for the written assignments in Turnitin, Blackboard.

School coordinators may give brief written feedback to the students at the end of the placement, and verbal feedback at the request of the student.

School coordinators may also provide a brief overview of how well the placement has gone for a particular student, and how well other processes have gone between the University and the schools, to support the placement.

Additional notes

1. Applications for Semester 1 (UCIL20001/21001/21000) are required by Thursday 18 August 2022

2. You will be invited to a short informal interview in person or via Zoom to discuss your reasons for wanting to undertake the unit and your suitability for this unit.

a. Interview dates are likely to be as follows: Weds 13 July, Thursday 14 July, Tues 23 August, Weds 24 August, Weds 31 August

a. The 2022-2023 timetable is given below

4. The units include the following teaching and learning sessions:

  1. Five two-hour seminars run at the start of the course over a two-week period;
  2. One two-hour seminar half way through the placement;
  3. Ten placement half days spread over a ten-week period on the same day each week that is suitable for both the student and the placement school;

5. You may opt for a primary or secondary placement depending on availability of places.

For a secondary placement, you will support teaching and pupils' learning of a curriculum subject that is closest to your degree discipline. If there is not a suitable match, your A level subjects may be considered depending on your A Level subjects and grades. For example, high A Level grades in Science subjects, Maths, English, History would be considered if you are studying Engineering, Law, Psychology or PPE.

6. You must have a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check overseen by the University of Manchester to be accepted on this unit. A DBS check takes about four weeks and this needs to be successfully completed before being accepted on the unit.
