Overview

This advanced undergraduate unit on Aerospace Structures 3 covers the fundamental concepts required to analyse and design aerospace structures and is an essential part of the undergraduate Aerospace Engineering programme.

Pre/co-requisites

Unit title Unit code Requirement type Description
Structures 2 (Aerospace) AERO21211 Pre-Requisite Compulsory

Aims

Building on the students’ existing understanding of the subject of structural and stress analysis of aerospace structures, this unit delivers advanced undergraduate topics such as theory of elasticity, linear elastic fracture mechanics, fatigue failure and analysis, classical plate theory, and composite laminate theory, with an emphasis of aerospace applications and problem-solving.

The aims of this unit are:

To provide a thorough understanding of the behaviour of aircraft structures subject to typical in service loading conditions , and the role of stress analysis on preventing structural failure.

To develop critical thinking and theoretical skills to analyse the stresses/strains in aircraft structural components, and predict/avoid failure of components made of isotropic and orthotropic materials
