Overview

Each Year 4 student will select two optional sub-units from the seven sub-units described below. They will receive an on campus introductory session to each selected sub-unit in week 1 in which they will be provided with an overview of content and subunit organisation.

For all sub-units except Industrial Pharmaceutics, students will receive online material supplemented with on campus live sessions (weeks 2, 4, 7 and 8). For Industrial Pharmaceutics, live sessions will be online. Content to be covered ahead of on campus/live sessions will be indicated within information supplied on BlackBoard/via subunit-specific introductory sessions.

Students will be able to “try out” options and make absolute final selections by the end of week 2, pending class size restrictions.

Please note due to timetabling constraints, it is not possible to select Treatement and Pathogenesis of Microbial Diseases and Viruses: Avoidance, Management and Treatment.

“Live” sessions will be delivered on campus, except for Industrial Pharmaceutics via Blackboard collaborate or Zoom. Details will be shared ahead of sessions. All “live” sessions will be recorded and made accessible to all students.

Online material will generally be short and equate in total to approximately 16h of face-to-face teaching time.

A formative assessment will be set for each subunit in week 4. The deadline for completion of the formative assessment will be set independently for each sub-unit.

Aims

  • To provide cutting-edge knowledge of advanced pharmaceutical science and methodologies through a range of optional units.
  • To facilitate understanding of how the science of pharmacy is applied in the design, development and clinical applications of medicines and diagnostic devices in different disease areas.
  • To provide students with the ability to relate specialist knowledge and skills gained in basic science disciplines to a range of challenging clinical problems in their future professional practice.
  • To promote development of critical analysis skills to allow students to review and evaluate research findings in specific areas of pharmaceutical sciences.
  • To promote self-learning and encourage students to integrate pharmaceutical science knowledge with pharmacy practice knowledge regarding specific drugs.
  • To provide a scientific and clinical background for those 4th Year students who selected science-based research projects.
  • To contribute to the education and training of other members of the team via podcast, oral and poster presentations.
  • To develop written and oral communication skills via poster, podcast and oral presentation.

Learning outcomes

  • Be aware of advanced approaches in pharmaceutical sciences in 2 out of 7 optional units broadly related to therapeutic areas.
  • Understand how the science of pharmacy is used in the design, development and clinical applications of effective medicines and diagnostics in different disease areas.

Assessment methods

Assessment

  • Exam (January), which includes components from the two chosen subunits: 10 credits each subunit; 20 credits overall exam.
  • Group poster, poster presentation (week 11) and podcast: 10 credits.
  • Students must achieve 40% on average across all 3 components to progress.
