Aims

This unit aims to prepare students for their future professional practice by taking a holistic view of the pharmacist’s contribution to safe and effective patient care with a focus on social, economic and population perspectives as well as reviewing the external influences on professional practice. The unit will provide:

  • an insight into the sociological issues of relevance to the practice of pharmacy
  • an awareness of external factors influencing and governing safe pharmacy practice
  • an introduction to the knowledge and skills for economic evaluation of medicines and health care
  • an understanding of patient safety theory and practice
  • an appreciation of the practicalities of the delivery of core pharmacy services
  • an overview of primary care pharmacy practice and the use of prescribing data.

To help preparation for preregistration, the unit will also provide students with:

  • an update on any important changes to the law since Year 2
  • a recap on professional skills since Year 2
  • an update on any important changes to healthcare policy and practice since Year 3.

Assessment methods

  • Closed book written examination – 80%.
  • OSPE examination (jointly with ‘The Patient’) – pass / fail.
  • Coursework: critical incident executive summary and presentation – 20%.
