A series of ten online learning packages, with recorded presentations & complementary activities, are used to introduce topics in a structured manner, supplemented by discussion groups, F2F seminars & activities and assignment clinics. 


To develop a range of skills for effective professional performance.

To introduce an awareness of the current job market and the recruitment requirements of employers in the sector.

To assist with effective personal promotion methods and help prepare students for the job application and interview process.

To start preparing students for the transition to and early years in the workplace

To explore the role of the RTPI, RICS & CIEEM in the professions.

To reinforce the interface between academic studies and planning/real estate & environmental management practice.

To understand the requirements of professional practice and ethical obligations and considerations.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course unit, you should:

  • Have used your knowledge of the job market to identify suitable job/work experience opportunities and searched for jobs via a range of sources.
  • Have developed an enhanced awareness and understanding of the knowledge, skills and qualities sought by employers and determined what employers want from applicants.
  • Understand the requirements of professional practice and have an enhanced awareness of ethical issues.
  • Have demonstrated competence in analytical and critical commentary.
  • Have recognised their own skills and abilities and prepared effectively for the application and selection processes.


Week 1 - 6th Oct                               Understanding the job market  

Careers search: what types of organisation; what are employers looking for; what is the recruitment process? Where are you and where do you need to be?

Week 2 - 13th Oct             Understanding yourself

‘Self audit’ - identify interests, strengths and areas for improvement  Developing your individual plan of action NB 10.00 – 12.00

Week 3 - 20th Oct             CVs and applications

Week 4 - 27th Oct             Understanding the professions 1              

Hear from people in the professions: what is their role, client care and current ‘hot topics’  PEM virtual careers fair on Wednesday 28th

Week 5 - 3rd Nov               Understanding the professions 2              

Hear from recent grads and their hints on securing your dream job – or the one that you have not yet considered                Individual meetings with your academic adviser: (Week 5 or Week 6)

Week 6 - 10th Nov            Transitioning to the workplace  

Teaching and learning methods

A range of teaching and learning methods are used.  Rather than conventional lectures, recorded presentations, videos and online activities are used to introduce topics in a structured manner.  These will recommend further research.  Activities explore a particular issue in more depth and encourage reflective thought.

The assessment for this course unit comprises one individual personal career and development report

Feedback methods

As you progress through the course unit, formative feedback will be given through Q&A live discussion, discussion boards and interactive ‘live’ activities such as the presentations and interview sessions. Verbal feedback is available on coursework discussed during online drop-in sessions. Substantive written feedback on your assignments will be provided through Blackboard.

There is no specified reading list for this course unit but you are expected to broaden your commercial and professional awareness and become familiar with industry publications and career information resources.

Additional notes


In third year, an important part of study is the continued development of individual learning skills. Whilst the online learning materials contain a significant formal teaching component and will introduce core topics, a strong emphasis is placed on self-directed learning.  It is expected that you will work diligently through the learning materials, do the recommended research and contribute to the discussion forums on Blackboard as well as participate fully in the ‘live’ online sessions where you can do so.
