We offer Portuguese language from Beginners or Advanced level. If you are taking A Level Portuguese we require grade B or above and you will be placed in the Advanced stream.

Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offer you will receive.

Applicants taking A Levels are normally expected to offer three full A Levels. If you’re taking more than three A Levels, these won’t be included in your offer. We will only make offers consisting of three A Levels.

Course overview

  • Build strong analytical skills and understanding of key areas of global politics.
  • Develop the linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to access and engage fully with political, historical and cultural issues in European and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • This is a 4-year degree course with an integrated Residence Abroad year. In 2025/26 there were opportunities for students to live in Brazil or Portugal.

Additional expenses

The Residence Abroad year is an integral part of the course and must be completed. Some costs, such as tuition fees, are substantially lower. Other costs can vary and they are not included in the tuition fee. For example, living costs may be higher or lower than the UK, and there are travel-related costs to consider, such as paying for a passport, visa fees, health insurance, and (if needed) vaccinations. Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application.
