Star Lecture archive – Laurence Brown
On Wednesday 29 February 2012 Dr Laurence Brown delivered a lecture entitled Migration and the Transformation of Manchester.
Dr Brown is Lecturer in Migration History at The University of Manchester. His main research interests are the Caribbean Diaspora (1760–present), labour migration in the remaking of 19th century colonialism, and the impact of migration on contemporary Western Europe.
Dr Brown discussed past and present migration to and from Manchester, focusing on the industrial and post-industrial eras. He examined the migration of different peoples to Manchester, including Irish, Jewish, Caribbean and South Asian, as well as migration within the UK. This raised interesting questions relating to segregation and multiculturalism in the city.
