Aims

To develop awareness of the principal features of academic writing and speaking at tertiary level, and provide students with opportunities for putting these into practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, successful students will be able to:

  • recognise the features of academic style
  • analyse contrasting features of written and spoken text
  • structure a coherent paragraph
  • recognise and produce coherence and cohesion within and between paragraphs
  • summarise information from texts
  • write an effective paraphrase
  • synthesise information from more than one text

 

 
 
 

Assessment methods

The course adopts a task-based approach to skills development. In addition to class work, students will prepare and submit, within stipulated timeframes.

Semester 1

  • Individual piece of writing (35%)
  • Five completed grammar sheets (15%)

Semester 2

  • Individual piece of writing (35%)
  • Five completed grammar sheets (15%)

To progress to year two all students must demonstrate competence in academic writing.  This can be achieved by achieving a score of over 90% in both computerised language tests, demonstrating competence in an initial written assessment during week 0, or by successful completion of unit 10010.
