The University of Manchester offers a wide range of scholarships to US students. Many of these are awarded on academic merit.

Fulbright Awards Programme

We are pleased to have funded a Fulbright-University of Manchester Award for master’s study for September 2018 entry.

We have previously hosted Fulbright scholars undertaking master’s courses in Law, Social Anthropology, International Relations and Development Economics.

Marshall Scholarship

The University offers Marshall Scholarships for graduate study in any subject at either master’s or doctoral level (excluding the MBA). In 2016 The University of Manchester welcomed five Marshall scholars to a wide range of programmes. 

Previous Marshall Scholars have studied a wide range of subjects, including MA Humanitarianism and Conflict Response, Art Gallery and Museum Studies and MSc International Development.

North American Foundation for The University of Manchester (NAFUM)

An initiative that was set up by University of Manchester US alumni, NAFUM is an independent foundation that supports our work and enhances our reputation in the US. The aim of the award is to provide a range of prestigious master's scholarships to attract excellent students to our University.

School scholarships

Some of our Schools will offer partial scholarships or bursaries; however, these do not always cover the full cost of tuition and living expenses. Details will be advertised on the relevant School website when scholarships are available.

Alliance Manchester Business School

The Alliance Manchester Business School is offering master's scholarships for US residents for 2021 entry.

Five scholarships are available across all Alliance Manchester Business School master's courses, with a value of £10,000 towards the tuition fee. The scholarships will be awarded in line with our application deadlines, so early application is advisable.

Global Futures Scholarship

The University of Manchester is proud to offer awards totalling more than £2.6 million to international students, commencing their studies in September 2023. The scholarship is open to both prospective bachelor’s and master’s students.

Undergraduate awards

We're offering 4 merit-based undergraduate scholarships of £5,000 to international students domiciled in the United States:

  • Students must be taking one of the following qualifications: US High School Diploma, Advanced Placement, Dual-Enrolment, IB Diploma, A-levels, Standardised Tests (optional) SAT or ACT

Please note the scholarship application form will only be made available to students who have applied and received an offer for a full-time undergraduate programme starting in 2023.

Award details

The Global Futures scholarships will be awarded based on academic excellence and your responses to questions in the online application form which will be emailed to all eligible offer-holders. 

The four partial awards will be open to applicants domiciled in the United States.

Each award comprises of £5,000 for the first year of study with a further £5,000 awarded in the second and third year of study (Years 2 and 3), conditional on attainment of 60% average in each year. 

Scholarships will be awarded in the form of an appropriate discount against published tuition fees. 

Please note the application form will only be sent to you once you have applied and been made an offer.

Summary of eligibility criteria

Applications will be considered from international fee-paying students domiciled in the United States.

Applicants must be applying for direct first year entry in 2023 and have, or be working towards, one of the following qualifications:

  • US High School Diploma
  • Advanced Placement
  • Dual-Enrolment
  • IB Diploma
  • A-Levels
  • Standardised Tests (optional) SAT or ACT

Applicants for the United States awards must have accepted a conditional or unconditional offer to study a full-time programme at The University of Manchester and must submit an online scholarship application form by 15 April 2023.

  • Awards will depend on results and transcripts from Grades 11 and 12 which can include APs completed in Grade 11.
  • The application form will be emailed to all relevant offer-holders.
  • Applicants will be considered for the award based on academic merit and the quality of their scholarship application.
  • Applicants must be self-funded (not sponsored).
  • Applicants for Medicine (MBChB) Dentistry (BDS) or Architecture degrees are not eligible for the award.
  • Applicants must have selected The University of Manchester as their FIRM UCAS choice by 15 April 2023. 
  • Applicants who have previously studied in the UK are not eligible for the award.
  • Applicants for blended and distance learning programmes are not eligible for the award.

How to apply

You must submit an online scholarship application form by 15 April 2023. The link to the online application form will be emailed to all relevant offer-holders. All scholarship applicants will be notified of the University’s decision by June 2023.

Master’s awards

We're offering 11 merit-based master’s scholarships of £8,000 to international students domiciled in the United States. Please note the scholarship application form will only be made available to students who have applied and received an offer for a full-time master’s starting in 2023.

Award details

11 awards of £8,000 will be awarded based on academic excellence and the quality of your responses in an online application form.

Scholarships will be awarded in the form of an appropriate discount against published tuition fees.

Eligibility criteria

Applications will be considered from international fee-paying students domiciled in the USA.

  • Applicants for the United States awards must have accepted a conditional or unconditional offer to study a full-time programme at Manchester and must submit an online scholarship application form by 19 May 2023. The application form will be emailed to all eligible offer-holders.
  • Applicants will be considered for the award based on academic merit and the quality of their scholarship application.
  • Applicants must be self-funded (not sponsored).
  • Applicants for MBA, MPhil, Master of Architecture (MArch), Architecture and Urbanism (MA), Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Clinical Medicine and Dentistry degrees are not eligible for the award. 
  • Applicants who have previously studied in the UK are not eligible for the award.
  • Applicants for blended and distance learning programmes are not eligible for the award.

In addition, a number of other faculty, school and programme-specific scholarships are available to students from the US. 

For PhDs, the University offers a number of competitive bursaries via individual Schools and research groups for well-qualified candidates. Please check with your prospective academic School for details and check the University’s postgraduate research funding database.
